High School Coaching Staff

We are here to provide families with the best wrestling experience possible! We are proud to bring you a group of highly accomplished coaches. Read the bios below to learn more about Blaine Wrestling coaches. 

 

Josh Prokosch

Head Coach - Varsity


Coach Prokosch has been the Head Wrestling Coach at Blaine since the 2011-2012 season. Prior to coming to Blaine, he spent seven years as an Assistant Coach at Osseo and Park Center High Schools. In addition to coaching wrestling at Blaine High School, Coach Prokosch teaches Physical Education (2011 – present) coaches football (2011 – present), serves as the Athletics Strength and Conditioning Coordinator (2012 – present) and manages the Summer Weights Program for the high school. Coach Prokosch graduated from Crown College in 2009 with a double major and a minor while also serving as a TA, RA and Football Captain. In 2015, Coach Prokosch was inducted into the Crown College Athletics Hall of Fame for football.

Coach Prokosch is currently working on his Masters of Education in Applied Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Minnesota with an anticipated graduation date of 2017. Outside of his activities at Blaine High School, Coach Prokosch also trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  

John Sundgren

Assistant Coach - Varsity


Coach Sundgren, a native of Coon Rapids, MN, began wrestling at the age of 6. He attended Blaine High School where he was a three-time state placer taking 2nd as a sophomore at 103 lbs, 5th as a junior at 119 lbs, and 2nd as a senior at 140 lbs. After graduating from Blaine, John went on to wrestle at St. Cloud State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. During this time he was a two-time NCAA DII All-American and a National Champion at 157 lbs. John was also a four time Academic All-American and served as team captain his final three seasons. After graduating from SCSU he went on to coach at Kimball High School (2011-2012), where the team finished second at the Minnesota Class A State Tournament. After taking a year off from coaching, John spent the next several seasons coaching at Spring Lake Park High School (2013 – 2016), before making a move back to his alma mater, Blaine High School (2016-present).
 

 

Chad Gutenkauf

Assistant Coach - Varsity


Chad was a four time Pierre, South Dakota State High School individual qualifier. Chad was a State Champion in 1984, also placing third and fifth. Chad’s high school record was 127-23-5. One of many accomplishments for Chad was being inducted into his High School Hall of Fame for Wrestling in 2012. Chad attended SDSU and was a four time North Central Conference place winner. He also qualified for the NCAA Division 2 National tournament three times. Chad enjoys mentoring young wrestlers to help them achieve their goals.

Don Studer

Assistant Coach - Varsity 
 
 
Don was a two time state individual entrant for Sherburn (Martin County West), a member of two state tournament teams, the school’s first State Champion, and first team Academic All-State. Wrestling at the University of St. Thomas, he was a four year starter, a three time MIAC Conference finalist and one time Champion, a four time National Qualifier, earning ALL America honors his junior year, and being named a finalist for the Tommy Award (Outstanding Senior). An injury ended his senior year before the national tournament. Don coached wrestling at Totino Grace for four years, serving as Head Freshman and Assistant Varsity Coach, and has coached in the Blaine Wrestling Program since 2006.
