Coach John Sundgren – Blaine High School Hall of Fame Inductee
John Sundgren is a 2006 graduate of Blaine High School, and began his varsity wrestling career as an 8th grader. Over the course of his high school career, he amassed 142 wins, placing him second all-time in program history. Sundgren earned All-State honors 3x and achieved notable finishes at the State Tournament: runner-up as a sophomore, fifth as a junior, and runner-up again as a senior. He also received NWSC All-Conference recognition twice and was named to The Guillotine Magazine's Academic All-State First Team.
Sundgren carried his success to St. Cloud State University, where he made an immediate impact on the wrestling program. As a redshirt freshman, he earned All-American honors with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Tournament. During his senior year, Sundgren became a National Champion at 157 pounds, marking the first national title for the program since 1995 and only the second since 1967. His outstanding performance earned him Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Year and St. Cloud State University Male Athlete of the Year.
After graduating, Sundgren has devoted many years to coaching high school wrestling. He has served as an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Blaine High School for multiple seasons, guiding numerous state entrants and all-state wrestlers, including Blaine High School’s first individual state champion in 40 years. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Blaine High School Hall of Fame in 2024.
Outside of wrestling, Sundgren is a dedicated teacher at DaVinci Academy in Ham Lake and a proud father to his daughter, Aubri.
